Thriller idea 2

I recently re-watched the film 'Misery' starring Cathy Bates and was on edge throughout the whole movie. This inspired me while thinking abut different thrillers to write and the different openings. The idea of an obsessive fan or personality is always creepy and can be paired with a powerful thriller storyline.

Thriller idea 1- recent news story

This current news was very disturbing to me but I thought that the opening to this could be a very interesting thriller. First reading the title might make you think this is more of a gory horror, but as you read the article you see how the murder happens and how quickly it happens, and I believe this would be a brilliant thriller opening.

Final Touches to Pulp Fiction remake

In todays lesson we were finishing up the title sequence with final cut pro. I found this to be harder than I thought as there were a lot of different tools that had to be used and the timing had to be perfectly inline with the timings in the film. We finally downloaded the correct fonts so that made the process easier. However fading the big pulp fiction sign smaller and smaller, in time with the real opening, proved very difficult as we had to work out how small it god by the seconds and apply it to our own title.

Key Film Industry Glossary Terms 2

Horizontal Integration: where one media company acquires another media company in the same sector, e.g. Cineworld acquiring Picturehouse Cinemas in 2012.

Digital technologies: primarily this refers to how the internet has changed the industry including online distribution, film streaming, piracy, legal and illegal downloading, 3D and digital projection...

Synergy: where two or more compatible products sell each other, e.g. a film and a computer game or a film and a soundtrack

Merchandising: where the popularity of film is manipulated and exploited through the sales of spin off goods, e.g the Star Wars franchise has made more money through merchandising over the years than ticket sales.

Franchise: the licensing of intellectual property from an original work which can be sold on using the same brand name for commercial exploitation e.g Harry Potter film franchise or Star Treck or Star Wars (8 Films) from Str Wars (1977) to Star Wars: The Force Awakens ( December 2015)

Event Movie: where the date of release is used in the marketing e.g Spectre on the first Monday of half term or The Hobbit where you have to wait until Christmas to see them.

Media Convergence: where film is available/consumed and can be marketed on a number media platforms e.g Cinema, Streamed, DVD, X BOX, Playstation...Film websites often have convergent links to a range of rich media.

Key Film Industry Glossary Terms

I thought by making a glossary of terms from the Film Industry it will remind me each time if i forget and help me remember, these are mainly what i collected from the BFI Film Festival.

Production: the physical film making process (the UK film industry is stereotypically more production led, the US distribution led)

Distrubution: getting films out to audiences and paying for the advertising and marketing. To understand commercial success, the role of distribution is crucial.

Exchange: audience film consumption on a range of platforms, e.g Cinema, DVD and streaming....

Multinational Conglomerate: large organisations whose business interests are global, utilising synergy and convergence and also cross media ownership- apart from Disney, all of the 'big six' film distributors are owned by multi national conglomerates.

Monopoly: where one company dominates the market. Netflix are currently dominating online film distribution

Oligopoly: where four or more companies dominate the market e.g the big six

The Big Six: the studios that dominate film distribution and form the oligopoly of ownership (owned by multi national conglomerates)

Globalisation: where films are distributed around the work through elaborate cross media marketing net works.

Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson was born in 1969 is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor. He is best known for his obsessively symmetrical compositions, snap zooms and a deliberately limited colour palette, just to name a few.

Trip to the BFI

On the 5th of November our media class visited the BFI on the Southbank for the introduction to the Film Industry talk. We looked into Independent and mainstream films and what similarities and difference they shared, and what characteristics make each type of film. We also looked into distribution and marketing, production and different types of exhibition sites. Personally i really enjoyed the Q and A's, especially the Q and A with Faye Ward, who produced many films including the current motion picture 'Suffragette'. I found this really interesting learning about the responsibilities that a producer has and how you can slowly work you way up in the industry by taking any opportunity that comes your way that links to the job/field you want to work in. The other Q and A's were also really interesting; Paul Ridd who works at Picturehouse and decides what films are purchased and Gareth Lowrie who is the senior marketing manager at Universal Pictures and recently did the marketing for 'Jurassic world'.
In general this day gave me a really good insight into different jobs in the industry and even introduced me to jobs that i had no idea existed.

First day editing

In todays lesson the group was divided in two and both completed different tasks, I was with Celine doing the opening credits which was harder than I thought as we had to download the correct fonts and place them in at the right times. Maddie and Thomas edited the footage and completed it, so now we just need to finish the title sequence along with the music. This was my fist time using final cut and it seems quite easy to grasp so I think it will be easier when I am using it next.

Choosing Pulp Fiction

Currently in media we are looking at ding remaks of openings of films. We chose to o pulp fiction as it is easy to recreate but is still power5ful and memorable. The scene conasist of around 6 shots, most of it being a conversation going back and forth from face to fac. The music oky kicks in at the end and the titles do not go over the video which makes it a good opening to redo quickly and effectively.

Pulp Fiction remake

Whilst filming the remake there was a lot of -planning involved. We all had to work togetger to get the outfits snd the props, the location was also hard to find. At fist we were all keen to film in the café in golders hil park as they contain the booths that look like the diner seast in the film, but after asking for permission they declined our offer. We had to make do with tables and cghairs set up by the windown in our lunch hall, behind the actos we place larger red sheets to create a bvackgroubndm this ended up woking well for us. All the props could be found within the school kitchen which was very conveiniant.

Pulp Fiction Font

Now the filming has been completed the next step is to work out the timings of the credits and the fonts used. This part is much harder than the filming itself as its all about timing which is very hard to execute correctly. There are four titles that we have found out; for the title the font used is Aachen, the opening credits font is Busorama, the closing credits is Friz quadrata and the title design being pacific title. We have currently only been able to locate Aachen and Busorama.

Opening of 'Seven'

The opening of Seven is what you would expect to see in a thriller opening. The music is distressing for the viewer to listen to and the rough cut shots of disturbing images flickering in and out is difficult for the viewer to watch. The two things tied together makes the first scene an uncomfortable experience for all, the audience watching unknown hands carry out creepy and dark deeds.

There is a huge sense of mystery and the feeling that you are watching the murderer himself; an insight into how he thinks, a clue to start the viewers off with before the case unravels in the film. There is a real obsessive feel to the fragmented shots, a theme following through all the clips. All the shots include bandaged hands and dirty fingernails, filmed above a tabletop giving the viewer an interesting perspective. The lighting in all the shots is dim and gloomy creating a sinister atmosphere, the font used over the top of the shots is ragged and untidy also adding to the sinister feel.

Pulp Fiction remake

Currently in media we are recreating the openings to chosen films in randomly selected groups, my group (of 4) are recreating Pulp Fiction. We started by watching the opening together a few times to get an idea of the length and difficulty of the re-make. Then we all took responsibility for different roles, my role was to write down the props and costumes in the scene and make a prop list to check of when we have them. Other roles were writing the script, the shot-list, the story-board and allocating the acting roles. This is the furthest along we have gone so far.
Luckily Pulp Fiction is a relatively easy opening to recreate as the scene mostly consists of two different shots going back and fourth, with the title sequence coming after the acting, not over the top of it. The props and costumes are also easy to get a hold of without wasting too much time or money.

Everest

On the 29th of September me and my media class took a trip to the IMAX cinema to see the newest Working Title film Everest. I thought the overall experience was really good as the IMAX creates such a powerful atmosphere due to its surround sound and 52mm high by 70mm wide screen.  We also experienced this film in 3D which made the film much more emotive and exhilarating to watch than watching it in standard 2D. Overall it was a really fun trip out as it was my first experience of the IMAX and it really blew me away, the film was enjoyable to watch and the 3D just enhanced this.
